GOP candidates split on litmus test

While most of the Republican contenders for the GOP nomination for President are conservative, only five support using abortion as a litmus test to support judicial nominees. They are: Gary Bauer, Pat Buchanan, Steve Forbes, Alan Keyes, and Dan Quayle. Another antiabortion candidate, Sen. Bob Smith of New Hampshire, left the GOP and joined the US Taxpayer's Party, the radical right party headed by Howard Phillips. The other five, George W. Bush, Lamar Alexander, Elizabeth Dole, Orrin Hatch, and John McCain, do not support such a test.

Abortion opponents are watching the race carefully because the next president will likely appoint future US Supreme Court justices, giving them the opportunity to overturn the 1973 US Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade.
