Majority Leader Senator Trent Lott (R-MS), along with a host of other powerful congressional Republicans - Gingrich, DeLay, Armey, Watts Jr., Kasich, McConnell, Ashcroft, Smith (NH) - addressed the Road to Victory conference. Senator Lott, unhappy with the Senate's failure to override President Clinton's veto of the so-called "partial birth abortion" bill by three votes on that day (Friday, September 18, 1998), called on attendees to defeat four Democratic senators up for reelection: Carol Mosely-Braun (IL), Russell Feingold (WI), Barbara Boxer (CA), and Patty Murray (WA). Lott pledged to keep fighting for an override stating: "This is not the end of the battle."
