School censors biology textbooks

Van Buren, Michigan Students taking advanced-placement biology or ecology classes this fall in the Van Buren school district will notice pages missing from their brand new textbooks. The school district's Health Advisory Committee recommended that pages with the headings "abortions and pregnancies" be torn out.

According to state law, abortion may discussed in a historical, ethical or social context, but not as a medically accepted and constitutionally protected alternative to an unwanted pregnancy. Since discovering the offending pages, the school district decided that tearing them out was their best alternative.
