Rev. Bob's 'God Squad'
Assistant Police Chief "Rev. Bob" Vernon is still under fire over his evangelistic activities in the Los Angeles Police Department. (See the Freedom Writer, May/June 1991 for background.) Testifying before the Christopher Commission on how Chief Da
ryl Gates runs his department, former assistant chief Jesse Brewer also leveled charges against Vernon.
Brewer testified that Vernon promoted officers who share his fundamentalist Christian beliefs. "He's the head of the God Squad, as we refer to it," Brewer said. "It's commonly known that the way you get ahead as far as Vernon is concerned is to become ali
gned with his church or to profess that you are born again."
Assistant Chief Vernon has denied that his leadership has a religious bent.
