Hatfield says America is 'not Christian'

Oregon's Republican Senator Mark 0. Hatfield is well-known as an outspoken born-again Christian. In a article he penned for New England Church Life (July/August), Hatfield said that America is not a Christian nation.

"Let me state categorically: America is not a Christian nation. We, as Christians, must come to grip with this fact, and look to where our real struggle lies."

Such things as prayer in the public schools, the inscription of "in God we trust" on our currency and pledges of allegiance to God and country do not make us a Christian nation.

Senator Hatfield added that there is a great danger in saying, "this is the Christian position" on any given issue. "When we say so, we imply that any other position is not Christian, in fact anti-Christian."
