Kopp and accomplices arrested

James Kopp, indicted for the October 23, 1998 murder of Dr. Barnett A. Slepian, which occurred at his home in Amherst, NY, was arrested this past April in France. Kopp allegedly shot and killed Dr. Slepian with a Russian-made carbine. Dr. Slepian was a well-respected gynecologist, who performed abortions at Buffalo Gyn Womenservices.

Kopp is in a French jail awaiting extradition on state and federal charges. The French have expressed reluctance to extradite Kopp, because, if convicted, he faces the death penalty. Until his arrest, Kopp was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list.

Following Kopp's arrest, the FBI arrested two alleged accomplices, Loretta Marra and Dennis Malvasi of Brooklyn, New York. The two were indicted after the FBI tapped their phone, bugged their apartment and monitored their email. Apparently, they kept in touch with Kopp and provided him with money while he was on the lam. Through the couple, the FBI traced Kopp to France. They are being held without bail.
