Supporters of the principle of the Separation of Church and State are mourning the passing of former Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun who died Thursday at the age of 90. A Nixon appointee, Justice Blackmun, who began his Court career as a perceived conservative, became a liberal and the champion of women's rights as the author of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, legalizing abortion.
At the news of his death, Barry Lynn of Americans United for Separation of Church and state said,"Justice Blackmun was a strong supporter of individual religious freedom rights and wisely insisted that government should have no role in promoting or subsidizing faith. Harry Blackmun was a towering figure in American law. He will be greatly missed."
