About Net News
Historythe Body Politic magazine started publication in January 1991 as a resource for the whole pro-choice community. Incorporated in 1992 as a not-for-profit, we received our 501(c)(3) status in September 1993. The all-volunteer staff consisted of Anne Bower as full-time Executive Director / Publisher / Editor, and Valerie Finkelman and Kathryn Cornell as part-time Associate Editors, with production help from other part-time volunteers. The magazine ceased publication with the Nov/Dec 1999 issue.
Our location in Binghamton, New York, (birthplace of Operation Rescue and current home to its founder, Randall Terry), has placed us in a unique position to observe the anti-choice movement in its various manifestations from street violence to the far-right political activism of groups such as the U.S. Taxpayer's Party. To counter these attacks, we have allied ourselves with other progressive organizations to fight the Right's agenda of using reproductive rights and abortion to recruit and manipulate individuals and organizations into the Right's broad agenda.
From the beginning, the Body Politic magazine has lived up to its mission:
while staying true to its motto, Real Reporting -- Not Sound Bites. Now this mission compels us to offer our own site on the Internet -- the Body Politic Net News.
- To provide the best and most comprehensive news coverage of issues relating to reproductive rights;
- To disseminate information on effective strategies for protecting reproductive freedom;
- To monitor and report activities, policies and laws that pose a threat to reproductive rights.
Over the years, we have seen that the reproductive rights activist community, while extremely dedicated, suffers from a lack of a place, a news center, with which to share information among themselves and with the nation. We have tried to make the Body Politic magazine serve that function, but new times call for new strategies. And so now we offer Net News, the place on the Internet to share information between our community and the public in a timely fashion. Given enough funding, we plan to make Net News the news service for the pro-choice community and the place to connect with other pro-choice, pro-democracy organizations and individuals.
A number of pro-choice organizations have established Home Pages on the Web. We have surveyed the sites and found them very informative, offering good information about the host organization and various aspects of reproductive rights and health care. The Body Politic Net News does not seek to supplant any of those sites, but rather draw them closer together using as a model our National Pro-Choice Directory and our dedication to reporting on efforts of the whole pro-choice community.
Help Net NewsYou can help us by using our site to share information from your organization or community and by submitting articles, opinion pieces, letters, or even poetry for consideration for use in the magazine or as part of the Net News. If you have your own pro-choice site and we have overlooked you in our Pro-Choice Directory, please let us know so we can link.
You can contact us by phone, fax, e-mail, or mail.
Finally, as a not-for-profit organization, all donations are gratefully accepted and needed if we are to become what we hope to be -- the pro-choice news center and community bulletin board.
