Protocols to the Left, Protocols to the Right:
Conspiracism
in American Political Discourse at the Turn of the Second Millennium
Chip Berlet, Political Research Associates
Dedicated to Jeremiah Duggan
Prepared for the conference "Reconsidering The Protocols
of the Elders of Zion: 100 Years after the Forgery." This conference
is being held to re-examine the infamous Protocols of the Elders of
Zion published just 100 years ago in Russia.
Please note:
This study does not claim that all people
who promote conspiracy theories are antisemitic, anti-Muslim, racist,
on the political right,
on the political left, or secretly encouraging people to believe in
the Protocols. Nor is it meant to imply these things. This slide show
illustrates the underlying
paradigm of conspiracism; and shows how the named scapegoats and feared
outcomes can be replaced, while retaining the same basic set of frames
and narratives. This show is best viewed on a computer
with high graphics resolution and a very fast Internet connection.
